How do battery systems increase efficiency when combined with diesel generators in existing installations?

Adding a battery system to an existing diesel generator setup is typically not intended to replace the generator but to reduce its runtime and improve fuel efficiency. Diesel generators operate most efficiently at 60-70% of their maximum output. By integrating batteries with an Energy Management System (EMS), the battery system can handle spikes in demand and supply the necessary power to keep the generator operating within its optimal fuel efficiency range.

How can battery systems integrate with industrial solar facilities to enhance total power generation?

Industrial solar facilities are often built with a DC-to-AC overbuild, meaning they have more DC capacity installed than the AC capacity they can inject into the grid. This design allows facilities to reach full AC output capacity earlier in the morning and sustain it later into the evening. However, once this AC limit is reached, any additional DC production from the sun’s energy throughout the day is lost as heat, leading to lost opportunity for energy generation.

By integrating battery systems, this previously wasted DC power can be stored instead of dissipated. The batteries hold this extra energy until AC output falls below full capacity, at which point they discharge, adding to production and creating new revenue opportunities.

Why is an Energy Management System essential for optimal power generation performance?

Battery systems on their own lack the intelligence needed to deliver full functional value within an integrated setup. An Energy Management System (EMS) coordinates multiple Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) to ensure each one operates at peak efficiency. The EMS directs excess generation to charge the batteries when available, then discharges them as needed to support demand while optimizing the performance of all connected DERs. In short, effective coordination through an EMS maximizes energy utilization and overall power generation.
